Parallels by Design embarks on an exploration of concept, craftsmanship and the artisans who make innovation tangible. Proof of concept – In this stage of the design process, hundreds of vehicle sketches are narrowed down to five that embody the concept in its truest sense. A combination of precise milling tools and hands-on sculpting techniques translate the vehicle into its first tangible form. The Cadillac design team spent a great deal of time in the hands-on sculpting phase for the XT5. The vehicle features unique character lines, both strong and subtle, that guide the direction of light across its sculptural surfaces.
At Cadillac, form follows philosophy. Technologies must be naturally integrated; details must stay true to the concept. By exploring the vehicle’s stance in three dimensions, designers can begin to understand what it will look like on the road.
The Public School Pre-Fall Collection takes shape in the draping process. Once the garment sketches have been decided on, the patterns are cut. Muslin draping, a process that involves pinning cotton fabrics to dress forms, gives the concept dimension and allows the team to explore how each piece will interact with the human form.
Defining Structure – Each collection features a series of rig pieces—garments that embody the highest expression of the concept. This is the starting point. From here, the designers must find a balance between progressive design and wearability.

In this stage of design, each detail must be justified. Is the silhouette too progressive? Is it progressive enough? More importantly, is the team excited to wear it? Yet the ultimate test lies in how naturally each garment evolves from its initial sketch and how closely it adheres to the concept.
