The Cadillac XT5 and Parallels by Design: Construction

At the intersection of two seemingly unrelated philosophies, we find parallels: dualistic principles of mutual understanding. Parallels by Design embarks on an exploration of concept, craftsmanship and the artisans who make innovation tangible. Take a closer look at the first-ever Cadillac XT5 and our journey with Public School to discover the parallels that unite our distinguished crafts.

A human touch – At Cadillac, high-quality executions convey precision and unify the interior experience. The design team prides itself on its extensive use of Cut-and-Sew—Cadillac is the only full-line automaker to construct every interior with this technique. Cut-and-Sew combines the precision of advanced technology with the care of handcraftsmanship.

Cadillac Cut-and-Sew—innovation meets handcraftsmanship

Cut-and-Sew introduces a human touch to an otherwise mechanical craft. The design team sews each hand-selected textile together to create the coverings for various interior elements. Both functional and decorative, every stitch is placed by hand. This level of precision relies on Cadillac’s highly skilled team of artisans with years of experience.

"The driver is looking to understand the story of how something was made. They want the feeling that they’ve invested in something that somebody else has invested in."

Each interior element is comprised of multiple cut-soft trim materials that are brought together with a live stitch that can be seen and felt. The capabilities of Cut-and-Sew have been taken to new heights in the first-ever XT5. Long sew lines enhance the understated elegance of its interior environment.

Every Cadillac steering wheel is sewn together by hand

The level of craftsmanship is elevated even higher when constructing a steering wheel. This is where the driver truly feels the vehicle—every design detail becomes tangible. To ensure that each steering wheel is of the most premium quality, the Cadillac design team must hand-stitch each component with a needle and thread. Each steering wheel features a one-of-a-kind stitch, and every stitch serves a purpose.

Inside, out – For the Public School design team, craftsmanship exhibited on the inside of a garment is just as important as its exterior. The labor that goes into each piece will ultimately elevate the experience of the garment. While some go unnoticed, meticulous construction details that hold a garment together offer the team a sense of pride.

"Every garment bearing the Public School name must withstand the test of time- we can look back and be proud of it for years to come."
DAN YI CHOW, PUBLIC SCHOOL

This emotion is something that emerges during the fitting process. The team must be mindful of every detail in order to execute with the level of precision that Public School has become known for; shoulder and neckline finishes may undergo several iterations of construction techniques until the team gets it just right. But when they do, the resulting sense of pride is greatly rewarding.
